Your beauty's deadlier everyday

PLUG!! A new number, Grace by Will Young, which I first heard on 91.3 (surprise suprise). You would've thought I'd have heard it on Jo Whiley or Chris Moyles or summat, but NO! heard it on xin jia po radio! I am well pleased with that (: And they've started playing Beyonce's Single Ladies, thank goodness. Haven't heard it on any other station, so, GET WIDDA TIMES YO.

That station is so good, they play Kings of Leon.. +100 points to 91.3, and especially to The Married Men (5-8pm, weekdays)

Ok back to the Will Young song. GOOD SONG, THIS! I heard it and i swear to god i thought MJ had released a new single after coming out of hiding in bahrain or kuwait or wherever he is.

And the vid is brilliant..it's got a horse in it! LOVE! I guess I like horses so much cos one of my very first Big, Difficult, books when i was a kid was Anna Sewell's Black Beauty. There's a handsome Black Beauty-esque horse in the vid too, exactly the way I imagined Black Beauty would look- the horse has a white star/diamond on his forehead (equine terminology?) too! I guess my affinity for horses is real and true cos in Australia, when I was I dunno, 12, I almost got frickin thrown off a horse (and I still VIVIDLY remember everything about the incident) but i still adore horses. J'adore Dior. ok no i don't, but i just felt like saying that :P

I remember the leadup to it. I got introduced to Chantahl's horse Shelley. Chantahl is the daughter of the owner of the Wattle Downs farm..she was just a year or two older than me. I felt honoured to have been allowed to ride on such a well-kept work horse. Put my palm out to let her smell me, and then proceeded to stroke her muzzle. As I did I noticed that her big brown eyelids were slowly fluttering to sleep, and that right there was an instant connection, because personally I'm not much of an animal person. I don't do well with dogs, cats, hamsters or whatever other domestic animal I come into contact with. It's always been that way. BUT, i feel very comfortable round snakes (creepy eh). There is a VERY REAL fear that builds up inside me whenever I come into contact with animals and I'm always just a millisecond away from freaking out. I find it very hard to let my guard down around em, but when I manage to and its mutual, I'm gonna bloody well remember that animal forever. Point in case:

  1. Brandy the dachsund (my family friend's dog- possibly the very first dog i came into contact with EVER, when i was just 2 years old and in Perth)
  2. Hunter the mutt (one of the SEVEN dogs on the Wattle Downs farm. can you imagine how freaked out i was?! Hunter looked like the spawn of a wolf and a dog..beautiful fella, and the only dog I've ever gotten along with since. I remember once my and my bros piled into the back of a pickup cos the owner wanted to drive us out to the outback and Hunter ran a good 5-10 mins after the truck , non-stop cos he wanted to come with us. I kept banging on the roof of the car to tell Chantahl to stop the truck and she finally did. Ash opened up the back and Hunter jumped in panting like mad. I wanted to cry or something man. Bloody LASSIE moment right there haha. Gosh i love that dog.

Geez, i think i have a very selective photographic memory. I only remember things vividly if there's a strong emotion associated with it. Ya learn something new about yourself everyday eh?

Ok back to Shelley the brown mare. Yeah I wish she was chestnut or glossy black so that I can have a cooler desciption, but nah, she was brown. And about 6 feet tall *__* It was my first time on a horse and I made a right fool of myself getting on her; not very glam at all. When I eventually got my ass in the saddle, I was very aware of the power of the animal cos i felt the muscularity of her withers and the toughness of her flanks. All this of course happened while I was holding on to the reigns for dear life. After I got "comfortable", Chantahl stopped leading the horse and I was left on my own to control her. We walked around the farm grounds for a good hour or so ( i love how perspectives change once you're high up on horse. everything's different up there). Eventually we walked back to the stable and on the way we passed the chicken coop. At that point, everything went downhill. Something spooked Shelley (according to chantahl it was one of the chickens, or chooks as she called them) and the horse REARED like, ZORRO reared. That's what it felt like up there man. Thank goodness i was super kanchiong and holding on to the reigns to the point that i got rope burn (which stings like a bitch) and i didn't fall off. But after that while Chantahl tried to calm Shelley down i was too much in shock to cry or scream or do anything. My life didn't flash before my eyes or anything, which what i expected to happen quite honestly, but yeah, i was shaking like a leaf and deathly quiet. I can't quite remember what happened after that, other than that i stayed on the horse all the way back to the stable, got off and got a MASSIVE hug from Chantahl's mum as she brought me to the kitchen and gave me a bar of chocolate (much like Prof. Lupin giving Harry chocolate after a dementor attack), and not telling ANYONE about it. Wtf anjali?!?! Issues, much!

I didn't hold it against the horse man. I still liked horses after that...I just observed them from afar, that's all. They're majestic, spirited and have lovely soft velvety noses. And by God they're graceful creatures. I actually sit and watch all the equestrian events at the Olympics. My horse tales don't end there. A coupla years later i found it somewhere inside me, the inner strength to get on a horse again, in Egypt. But that one deserves a post of it's own ;)

How appropriate, that Will Young chose to depict an equestrian event in his Grace video.

Why don’t you slow down
Turn your head round
Been treading on hearts
That are giving in with a little
Grace - you’re getting away with it
Words - but nothing to say with it
You smile and take what you need in any way that you please
Isn’t it a shame
You’ve - Nothing to show from these
Lies - I told you you’d pay for it
Lonely are the days of your life

This comes from a loving place: I can't help thinking this song was written for you, Mr. Brightside.
