I was like EH. Isn't that from the Don soundtrack?? And sure enough it was. With some of my mah google spy skillz, i found out that "Aaj Ki Raat" is the only song other than MIA's Paper Planes on the SM OST that's not by A.R.Rahman. So, now i'm EXTREMELY curious to find out how the song will feature in the movie cos it's a real snazzy disco number and you have to HAVE to click on the vid and hear the song. The dancing is not so fab lah (i only like routines choreographed by farah khan, so bite me. She's credited as one of the choreographers for the movie, I'm not sure if she did this routine man..its not as energetic and innovative as her routines usually are)
The weird thing is, I only watched Don on Monday. Viv and i walked into videoezy and pretty much cleared out the bollywood section, and got all the good stuff, not so much the filmi stuff.
- Ben Kingsley's Gandhi (i dunno why it was in the bollywood section when its an academy award-winning english picture. Oh-kayyyy)
- Dil Chata Hai (i know all the songs wbut i've NEVER watched the movie, how sad is that
- Don- The Chase Begins Again (okok fine, this is a purely commerical film. and i only watched it cos of Shahrukh Khan. He has that effect on e alright?!)
- Lagaan
Watching Lagaan (click on link if you dunno what te movie is about) with viv was brilliant. The movie was first released in 2001, which means i was in primary 6 and he was in primary 2. They've showed it once or twice on telly before, but even then we were too young to fully grasp the film. It helps loads that both of us picked up cricket since (he still plays, i don't. but that's another story).
Since the movie has tonnes of cricket in it, especially during the climactic 3-day game betwen the british cantonment players and the indian villagers, we had tonnes to talk about. He said that aamir khan bowled like a boy (meaning, in an inexperienced way. cos being an Indian, you'd expect he'd be more pro at it). The actor who played the british team's captain was an excellent bowler..the kind that makes you frown, raise your eyebrows and nod your head in an *impressed* way. His form, from the run-up to the follow through was perfection. And then there was the batting styles. Haha ok aamir looked damn nooby doing that too..I don't know whether it was deliberate or what, but the way he played wasn't very defensive..attack stance all the way through (meaning, the kind of bent-knee, bat held up above albow height, ready to swing, baseball-style stance). If we had done that during a match, coach would've told us off, right D? (well ok maybe not. but i got told off once..i'll never forget it :P) Defend your wicket! But then again, sometimes you just gotta forget about defending and just whack the muthafucka outta the park and score a sixer cos that's one of the best feelings in the world.
One thing struck me. The players had to declare to the umpire their bowling style before they started their over, which is regulation play. I've never had to do that man..I feel like i've been cheated because i've never played a proper PROPER cricket match before :\
OH MAN the movie was holy drama. Like watching a must-win, high stakes India-Pakistan match..for the sake of national pride. Every wicket taken, every run made made my heart beat faster (as drama as that sounds, this shit was as exciting to watch as World Cup/Euro match, where the team you're rooting for is getting pwned but they pull off some magic and win the match). Every " no ball" and "wide" call by the umpire was HEART STOPPING. Every LBW dismissal or "run out" was heart pain. (D, you should really really watch this movie)
This has got to be the best scene...the VERY last over, the very last ball, down to the wire. Basically Kachra, the character on the batting end, needs to make a single so that aamir can switch position with him to take the last ball, cos the village team NEEDS to make a sixer to win the match. (i know what you;re thinking now. JARGON *__*) But he doesn't make the single. Instead, on the second last ball, the bowler makes a "No ball" cos he oversteps the crease. And the dialogue is in hindi with no subs, BUT the scene doesn't require an understanding of the language to get what happens.
Watching this movie reminded me of my favourite reebok bat, with the blue grip (haha it's my fave, but i scored my first sixer with a much bulkier, well-seasoned bat with a mangy grip). And the fact that I never worn my cap for matches (i dunno why, i just didn't..even though i really should've). And the fact that I've never actually played WK (wicket keeper) before. I learnt that you can stop the ball from crossing the boundary by stopping it with your foot in mid-run, as long as the umpire doesn't catch you :P (wahlao, coach gave me shit about doing that once when he himself has probably done it millions of times, and i always saw the boys doing it cos he prob told them to -__-) So many memories.
These past week has been bollywood to the max man. Watched Ajay Devgan's "U, Me Aur Hum" on vasantham on sat (STUPID MOVIE. i only watched it cos of Kajol), the stash of rented DVD's throughout the week and then Karan Johar's Dostana in the theatres yesterday. I have so much bollywood in my system right now (maybe THAT's why i was so melodramatic on tues...hmmm). But I want MOAR.
