I just got back from Star Trek- with G, THE trekkie. the only person i will acknowledge as a trekkie cos all the others are pretenders. just as i really only acknowledge that my own brothers are star wars fans. and shaun too (hi shaun, if you're reading this)
to put it plainluy, i genuinely loved it. no wait, i LOVED IT *proceeds to run around the room flailing arms excitedly as i did through much of the movie*
be warned, i am mostly going to gush about Star Trek. yes i can't believe i'm saying it either.
WHAT. WHAAATTT!.
I kept saying that alot cos I was absolutely fucking floored by the movie. Visually (ILM- Industrial Light & Magic- the people behind Star Wars, thankyouverymuch :P ) and sonically STUNNING (kudos to mike giacchino- yup a large part of why i put up with the tv series Lost is cos of the soundtrack- they are masterpieces the way they play with your emotions). Ok lah, it's not yet on a John Williams iconic level (tracks such as "The Imperial March"-aka darth vader's theme music you noobs, come to mind), but it's in a league of it's own and i can defintely appreciate it. I love the ethnic nuances of the Vulcan leitmotifs..it sounded like an erhu actually!
LEONARD NIMOY is godlike. Him and Patrick Stewart (i hate bill shatner) are my only links to the Star Trek universe. I'm familiar with the Star Trek universe, because being a sci-fi fan, i guess at a very young age i was exposed to both Star Trek and Star Wars. No wait its the other way round. I was exposed to both THEN i became a sci-fi fan. (yeah guess who did the intro-ing...now dya know why i love my dad so much?) i weighed my options and chose Star Wars (which I still love dearly, don't you forget that!). I know bits and pieces of the lingo enough to have a convo with G.
"Live long and prosper".C'mon. That's catchphrase is as much as part of pop culture as is the iconic image of The Beatles and Abbey Road (well at least in my perception of the world). And hell, that is the parallel to May The Force Be With You as far as I'm concerned. My personal fave though is "beam me up, scotty!" :D which wasn't actually in this move, eh G?
SPOILER ALERT-------
Just laying eyes on The U.S.S Enterprise- COME ON. EPIC moment.
Leonard Nimoy and Zach Quinto. Spock and Spock. OHMYGODWTFBBQ. all i could do was hold my hands to the sides of my face in awe.
As for Uhura...Silver-tongued spock seducer!! I actually liked Zoe Saldana before this. Not anymore. Maybe its cos i'm seething with jealousy at the fact that she got to snog Spock/Zach Quinto.
yeah if you haven't figured out by now, Spock was and still is my fave. I love the conflicted characters..the ones fighting deeper battles on the inside- harry, draco (yes i really did just say draco.), anakin, aragorn, gambit..they always have some sorta tussle btwn doing what they want to do and what they must do. but anyways, what's not to love about an intellectual vulcan with heart? whom i can't figure out. and whose eyebrows fascinate me.
Lightsabers > Phasers!
alot of the movie I was going omg that's so clever! but the thing about alernative dimensions, time travel..i watch Doctor Who and all, but that was a REAL mindfk. I promise never to use the term mindfk lightly again cos I finally experienced one properly hahahaa.
Eric Bana as Nero was..sufficient. But i don't think he felt enough like a Villain. Like a Supervillain, that is what you'd expect of a movie of this epicosityness. Simon Pegg as Scotty is love. Wish there was more of him. And Chekov :D :D ah-daw-rah-ble. James T Kirk. hmmm..i haven't decided what i make of him. he's just really not my type, i guess!
Oh yeah s
Speaking of Doctor Who,
the trailers before the movie..Chris Eccleston (the shite Doctor from season 9) is the baddie in the new G.I Joe movie. Wtf. firstly, i didn't even know they were doing a G.I. Joe movie. Secondly, nothing in that trailer vaguley resembled anything to do with G.I. Joe...except for the military thread. I swear I thought it was Thunderbirds. I mean, my bros used to play with G.I Joes and Action Man...that was NOT G.I joe. That was Channing Tatum in a batsuit thing. And one of the Wayans brothers is in the lineup. That was laughable in itself. and oh, Sienne Miller, a villainess?! WHUT.
ok fug that.
MUST WATCH:
- Angels & Demons
- Terminator: Salvation
- Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen (i have to watch this NAO)
But once again I must reiterate. I have chosen my side and I am sticking with it, because quite frankly it has become a part of my identity.
Star Wars 4EVA.
