I think I need to OD on coldplay before I can stop thinking about/talking about/referencing/listening to them. Temporarily at least. it's OBSSESSIVE.
everytime I'm on youtube, i search for vids involving- coldplay
everytime i'm on itunes shuffle...i keep forwarding until i get- coldplay
everytime there's nothing to watch in telly, i go to the playlist of my tivo and pickout- Coldplay at Glastonbury
when i want to pick out something to wear to go meet my mates- Coldplay concert tshirt
when i was watching Idol with viv today, i wondered aloud if any contestant has done a coldplay song before. when i found out that matt giraud attempted VLV, i was incredulous + wtfhowdarehe at the same time.
eh but this is considered the effusive love for coldplay boiling over. i believe i can trace it back to the day I got VLVODAAHF, the album. I got it on June 18th last year, a week after it was released. I was out with Ven and I got it at the gramaphone at Bugis, which i didn't even know existed. It was viv's bday, the next day. That was the day I went to the zoo with karthik to see sinders, after which the familia went on the s'pore flyer. And when I got back I finished listening to it.
I'd only gotten through the first 4 tracks on june 18th. Life In Technicolour..it was like atmospheric Felix Felicis- you knew you were in for a good listening session once you got a taster of LiT. (if you dont get the Harry Potter reference too bad :P) Of course by then I'd already heard Violet Hill (track 8) and Viva La Vida (track 7) cos they were the first 2 singles released. Then there was Cemeteries of London..i thought it sounded like a modern interpretation of one of Shakespeare's ballads. I loved how deceiving 42 was, cos it started out so soft and piano-driven and i expected it to sound like Trouble. But Noooo! Jonny got to let rip his guitar prowess-ho yes.
Then there's Lost!..what i feel is the track you can feel Eno's influence most on. One reviewer said it sounded like U2's I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For..and that stuck with me ever since. It influences the way I hear the song..hey, I love U2 as well (i'm not quite sure if i do so as much, though), but yeah I give respekt to the elders. The church organ on Lost! is love. Lovers in Japan..i think I needed to see the accompanying video, which was only released much later in the year, to fully appreciate the magic of the song. The hidden track, Reign of Love that followed won me over..just the piano and chris' voice, will ALWAYS win me over., let's just put it that way.
I LOVE the violins on Yes. Heartbreaking in the intro, jaunty and almost threatening during the bridge. And i quite like Chris' voice all low like that..switches things up a bit. Personally I don't like Chinese Sleep Chant, the hidden track..it's a load of noise, like leftovers of a jammin session. ok the guitar solo is decent..that's all i'm willing to give.
I have a soft spot for Strawberry Swing..it's so uplifting, and optimistic and delicate at the same time. It evokes images of Ewan Mcgregor and Charlie Boorman travelling on their bikes in Long Way Down through Africa. yes, there's a spirit of adventure about it..cos when I listen to songs I categorise them into scenarios.."could I hear this song on a roadtrip? while i'm in New Zealand? or Egypt? or on a boatride?" I associate music with situations and SS i most associate with travel..and travel is a deeply fulfilling experience for me. As is this song.
Death and All His Friends is like 42 again..the deceivingly harmless intro and then the kickass soaring cadence, at the bridge and then the softening again towards the end. The track is like poetry. *insert heart shape* The Escapist, the hidden track is so underrated. Eno's atmospheric sounds at their finest...it's like fairy dust and butterfly confetti falling in slow motion. Like rain..rain in the sunlight.
I love this album with the majority of my heart. Can you tell?
And now. One of the reasons why I adore Chris Martin.
