yet another in the list of K-filled Dharma Productions movies (read: kuch kuch hota hai, khabi kushi khabi gham, kal ho na ho) but all them K's have served Karan Johar well, so i really don't blame him ;) frickin BLOCKBUSTER lah this movie, just like the rest.
so i sorta skivvied off to j8 to watch the movie after school on friday..a 3.40 show(ha! earlier than anyone else :P) and the razster happened to be there too :) as soon as the all familiar KKHH tune played in the intro before the movie started proper, i kinda freaked out cos i'd been waiting so long and i was genuinely excited lah(so let me be!)
SPOILER ALERT:
so basically the story revolves around the plot that
It’s weird, I was really liking the movie at the beginning. I think I actually did like the movie. There are a lot of funny parts that were so damn lol. sleazy jokes with sexual innuendos galore, especially by amitabh bachan's character Samarjt "Sexy Sam" Talwar. he dresses like a pimp(i swear i was waiting for the damn pimp cane) and he's essentially a dirty old man, but gotta give it up for his incredible screen presence and charisma after all these years.kirron kher was perfection this time round..jaya bachan would've never been able to play SRK's mom better..at least not in this movie, cos she's too maternal and uptight :( but she's the only person who would've been able to play SRK's mum with such finesse in KG3, so kudos to that.
abishek bachan as Rishi was SUCH a stud, he made me smile..he fit the role to a T lah. pulled it off with such ease and vulnerability(when the script called for it) the fella really has blossomed. and there's something about the scruffy beard that makes him so attractive. that coupled with his spiffy suits and loud, totally metro and totally manish malhotra shirts and blingin belt buckles.
and at this point i'd like to bring up how funky all the eyewear in this movie was. from big b's mat glasses to srk's frameless specs, everything was very fashion forward about it. as expected of a KJ film.
SRK's opening scene was painful to watch cos it was so corny. Remember how KG3 opened with Hrithik scoring a sixer(at cricket) and we don't actually see his face(only his gorgeous green eyes) until after he's scored and he makes this oh-so-dramatic turn to sweeping violin strains? well its kinda like that, except that this time its with SRK scoring a decisive penalty and celebrating by sliding on his knees to the corner flag and pulling his jersey over his head and screaming wildly. so predictable lah! and he wasn't even convincing :P and there was blantant product placement especially in the beginning of the movie for Nike. nike this, nike that..wtf. ADN what made all this even worse was the fact that he had a damn tattoo which said "victory" on his inner arm (a la beckham..think "victoria") and a reviewer pointed out the fact that Srk's wife, Rhea's name (Preity) has great significance. you see, victory+ rhea= victoria! wow, THAT was subtle. pfft!could it get any worse?! yes it could! SRK's character is Dev. Dev-id. David Beckham, geddit? -_-
and their kid looks like frickin chicken little i swear.
and dev and maya(rani), who're married to different people but met each other on a bench in Sam's estate before her marriage to Rishi, meet once again 4 years later through a plot device so desperate, its laughable. meet 'blackbeast", a murderous child kidnapper who's after desi kids. ok nevermind, just watch the movie for this bit. so we have rhea, the diva from DIVA (a fashion mag..with arjun rampal as the head editor or something. swoon!) married to Dev the now crippled ex-football star(as fate'd have it, he got hit by a car immed after meeting maya) who's got issues since he's no more the man on top and his wife's the one with the um..balls. And maya who can't bear a child(for reasons unknown. other than that she's just a teacher) is married to Rishi who's a big time PR stud (in a firm called Kamikaze. what-everr)and needs reigning in cos he's such a kid.
so dev and maya attempt to figure out how they can salvage each other's marriages. along the way we have SRK asking for his ass to be spanked (i'm sorry that's all that registered :P) and they sorta fall in love with each other cos their own respective marriages really CMI(cannot make it) and that's where all the confuddlement begins.
along the way we have cameos by arjun rampal(as mentioned above), kajol (that's my girl! she was originally offered maya's role but she had to turn it down cos she's already committed to Fanaa. but damn, it would've been brilliant to see SRK & Kajol, the perfect couple, paired up again) and whatshisname John Abraham.. as a dj in the nightclub during the "where's the party tonight" sequence.
songwise, the soulfully mellifluous 'tumhi dekho na' is a coming-of-age kind of number, like ‘kuch to hua hai’ in Kal Ho Na Ho. and it helped alot that the vid was shot so beautifully..sorta like the colour song from "Alaipayuthey". it employs colour codas and coordinated outfits and they even got new yorkers in on the act. i even rmb seeing a H&M bag specific to the colour that the particular segment of the song was shot in, haha. Rani is impeccably stunning in her backless-bloused saris (she makes indian women look good lah) and i couldn't help falling in love with her eye makeup! aaah! the hues of her eyeshadow made her eyes sparkle i tell you, as if her eyes weren't enrapturing enough!
'where's the party tonight' is reminescent of 'time to disco' from KHNH. the setting(a NY disco), and farah khan's trademark moves didn't help much in differentiating this song from its predecessor. but its gonna be a hit lah..either this or rock n roll soniye.
KHNH title track= KANK title track. no need to say anything more
and i'm sorry but i can't help comparing every song to what was offered up in KHNH cos its the same dudes, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy who did the music for both.
'rock n roll soniye' on the other hand was more reminescent of a kajra re sorta track.there's a line that goes "sexy sam, wham bam wham bam thank you sam". effing P.I.M.P lah. and they made KAJOL lipsynch the lines. wahlao..but at least she looked resplendent in her pink sari while doing it :P
'mitwa' has got to be my fave, even the "revisited" version on the soundtrack. its lyrics speak of soul searching and the like (at least that's what i picked up from reading the subtitles) but the fact that the tune is so easy on the ears and uncomplicated makes its lovable.
ok that's all. KANK is the best out of the K-laden movie name stable of K.Jo..but i don't think it'll gain the 'classic' status that Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has recieved. not any time soon, at least.
